If one prefers Dennis's version, that's cool. But I wouldn't begin to assume the level of sincerity in every performance from Joe Cocker or Dennis.
I've never found the song very intriguing or interesting myself, any version. It's of a similar ilk in my mind to Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are", an (arguably) sappy, melodramatic song that was overplayed in the 70s.

Every time I see or hear a show from the 70s or early 80s with Dennis singing YASB, I think of the KAJILLION *other* songs he could have been singing instead.
I've also heard some wasted Dennis performances of YASB that he probably didn't remember the next day.
Nevertheless, his family/estate should have fighting years ago to get his credit back for the song.
